This was a change in Diablo 3, where instead of employing mercenaries you gained three different companions during the story campaign. The Scoundrel, Sorceress, and Templar, represented ranged DPS, tank, and magic players respectively. In the course of my Diablo 2 Resurrected adventure I only encountered friendly NPCs who stuck around for D2R Items for a few days and then rode off into the sunset. When I asked Jackson what the follower function would work in the game, they said "for the launch version of the game, we do have some places in the story in particular in which you'll see certain named NPCs following you and helping in figuring out the what Lilith is doing on the planet.
"We don't have anything to say about the Diablo 2-type follower you've hired - - we're sticking to the campaign until now." The emphasis is on the"for now.
With a wry smile they continue "stay close, we may have something exciting in the near-term to share, but there are no promises." This instantly triggered an immediate response from the producer of the dungeon Ash Sweetring, who channelled her character"Mr. Burns with an 'interesting hand motion in the background. That's my definition of sus.If any variation of the follower system makes its way into the Diablo game, I would prefer it to be the Diablo 2-style hired gun rather than omnipresent friends. I liked the vast array of abilities that followers brought to the table when they played Diablo 2 and would love to see this expanded upon. This opens up even more opportunities for various designs, and awesome demon-slaying ability chains.
In the meantime you should read up on the Diablo 2 Resurrected classes, since they're the ones we'll be playing as mostly. In a separate interview , games director Joe Shely, however, it was suggested that the roster could expand in the future since the game isn't forever in Sanctuary.
The principal developers of Diablo 2 Resurrected have stressed that they don't want players "feel that they have to pay to win" as the game comes out in the coming year.
In a recent Diablo 2 Resurrected livestream(opens in new tab), game director Joe Shely, along with the game's associate director Joesph Piora, also community manager Adam Fletcher gave fans an update on D2R Ladder Items all things Diablo 2 Resurrected, as well as gave an insight into how things will work prior to the game's release in the summer of next year.
