"It's most likely worth noting that it's priced higher than you'd think. In that respect, it's an excellent fit for the games that people want from Square Enix. There might not be much to D2R Ladder Items gain from the other companies that are copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately, that cost isn't stopping Square Enix from releasing more games with this design.

A remake of Live a Live is set to release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently developing. There are numerous other games which could benefit from this design, and it will be interesting to learn what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has clearly invested in this design style, Asano went on to say that there's no current "definitive Bible," and it will be evolving in each new game.

"We aren't putting together anything similar to this. The way the story is told differs in each movie, which means that the HD-2D flavour will differ slightly each time. In the case of Live A Live for example, the atmosphere in the prehistoric portion will be different to the sci-fi scenario.

Our expression options have expanded thanks to the latest concepts we've developed. "While the price might be prohibitive for some developers, HD-2D has definitely been a major selling point for a lot of gamers. It is our hope that we will continue to be able to see Square Enix find new ways to improve the design to make more games to follow!
