"When I was at Blizzard," said Wilson, "the reason for doing the real-money auction house was to ensure security. The reason was not money. We didn't think we'd make any money off it. The main issue in D2R Items was item duping and duping hacks along with all of the sellers selling gold, along with all the other things."
So, as Wilson explained, Blizzard's way to avoid this problem with Diablo 3 was to take control of the market for trading. This is also why the game made the decision to require an all-time-online internet connection. Wilson affirms that the moment you give an offline client, the hackers "got the game." Always on the internet and the auction house were Blizzard's bad attempts to contain the issues that plagued Diablo 2.
However, shortly after its launch in 2012 the auction house in Diablo 3 was deemed to be one of the biggest flaws in the game, frequently slammed and ridiculed by the public. However, getting rid of it wasn't easy and wasn't due to technical difficulties. The reason for its sluggish removal for 2014 was due in part to the auction house an envisioned feature of the game , which was printed on all its retail boxes and there were legal concerns about cutting it.
"The reason why we didn't remove it the moment we noticed that it was a problem was legally we didn't think we could because it was advertised on the cardboard boxes" added Wilson. "So we were able to think about all legal issues before we decided 'OK, we think it's worth it to try it in the event of the chance to sue, well, it's okay.'"
Incredibly, when it has been done, Wilson states that the auction house didn't even achieve Blizzard enough money and he says that when it was worth more than 10 or 15 million dollars, the designer would feel "surprised." And , while it may sound like an enormous amount but that former Diablo 3 designer countered that World of Warcraft makes that kind of money every few hours or as often. Another dev in the room joked that, like usual you "always make lawyers accountable." This is why the people D2R items for sale console didn't like it and it didn't earn much profits. It was a complete waste of time for all who was involved!
