Why did the Giants trade Kadarius Toney

The 2021 NFL Draft produced some incredibly impre sive receiving talent. Ja'Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith, and Elijah Moore were all part of this cla s. But one draftee, No. 20 overall pick Kadarius Toney, seemed destined to be a bust.Toney was drafted by the Giants, and he never seemed to get wheels up in his rookie year. Toward the beginning of training camp in 2021 he was placed on the team's COVID list, and through the first three weeks he played just 34 percent of the team's offensive snaps. In 2022, Toney started slow again before being traded to the Chiefs on Oct. 27 for a third-rounder and a sixth-rounder in the 2023 draft.Toney has enjoyed a few solid performances with Patrick Mahomes, and the Chiefs' lack of a No. 1 receiver Montrezl Harrell Jersey seems to have benefitted him in that way. Because of the rotational nature of how Mahomes disperses the ball, Toney has already hauled in a pair of touchdowns after not catching any in New York. He also has just one drop since joining the Chiefs in Week 9.MORE: In short: Things did not click between Toney and the Giants. It started with his appearance on the COVID list, continued with Toney's sparse appearances early in 2021, and escalated when Toney was again placed on the COVID list in December of 2021.Toney did finish second on the Giants in receiving yards in 2021, but that was more an indictment of the receiving corps as Blake Griffin Jersey a whole. When Toney tweaked his hamstring in Week 2 and mi sed five games of the 2022 season, the Giants cut their lo ses. Toney mi sed 10 games out of 24 po sible appearances with the Giants.Toney also didn't seem fond of how the organization handled his injury, tweeting out rebuttals to reports the Giants wanted to be cautious with him.Lmao Wrong Again Kadarius Toney (@0fficialC2N) Adding to the injury i sues, Toney was one of the vestiges of the Dave Gettleman regime, one of the most disastrous GM tenures in recent NFL memory. From that perspective, it likely wasn't hard for Joe Schoen to move on from the receiver. CoachIts a continual competition at receiver. Ive said it since, when? Im not being a jerk. Ive said it since the middle of camp, right? It hasnt changed. Its going to be a continual competition.Kadarius had opportunities today, and well see what it is next week: maybe its (Darius) Slayton, maybe its more (Kenny Golladay). Well see where we go with that. But I think that position, were just going to Tobias Harris Jersey keep on rolling guys and play the guys that week that we think would give us the best chance. And the other guys got to be ready Patrick Beverley Jersey as backups.Basically, a lack of ability to stay on the field and the Giants not being impre sed with what they saw regardle s led to them moving on from Toney. Heading into this week, the Chiefs wide receiver room is in the shape it's always been: Decent names, questionable production. Mahomes, however, has made it work.Keep in mind, the Chiefs' true No. 1 receiver -- tight end Travis Kelce -- is not on this section of the depth chart. So that's over 100 catches unaccounted for.PlayerTGTRECYDSTDJuJu Smith-Schuster101789333MarquezValdes-Scantling81426872Justin Watson34153152Skyy Moore33222500Kadarius Toney17141712MORE:Smith-Schuster and Valdes-Scantling, a pair of offseason acquisitions, are paving the way for the Giants. But after that the depth chart is thin. No receiver has replaced the production of Tyreek Hill, which is unsurprising. But that just means the opportunity for targets is there. For the Giants, there's an argument to be made wide receiver is the weakest part of their roster.Hopes are high for Isaiah Hodgins, but he's very clearly still a work in progre s, and Darius Paul George Jersey Slayton is sporadic at best. Although Toney was far from answer, the Giants still find themselves in dire straits at receiver.PlayerTGTRECYDSTDDarius Slayton71467242Richie James70575694Isaiah Hodgins42333514Marcus Johnson229990Kenny Golladay176811The Giants have built an offense based around the athleticism of Daniel Jones, as wide receiver clearly isn't an option for them.Toney may not break out as a bona fide star in Kansas City, but the climate clearly suits him better. The Giants strangely helped him by taking some pre sure off him and putting him in a position where he won't be force-fed targets. With both teams in the divisional round, it seems to have worked out well so far. But all it takes is one solid game from Toney is what's left of the postseason to make this deal a steal for the Chiefs.
