It's not a secret that raw stats aren't the be all-all

The days leading up the draft can be stressful when you're on one of the teams that isn't doing well, as everyone is hoping their team doesn't do something wrong. If your team is in the playoffs, great -- you're hoping a bad team screws up and Madden 23 coins lets the best player down.

Thus far we've had several mock drafts by ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay however, Tuesday was their first combined mock of the year, with the two draft experts switching picks from the beginning of the second round all the way through the the end of this round. Today we'll examine the most important things that leapt out at me after seeing this mock.

I'm really impressed with Georgia defensive end Travon Walker but I think we've hit silly season with Travon Walker. Walker was a mid-to-late first round pick at best in the lead up to the Combine and then he impressed anyone with his athletic potential and then his stock has jumped at the top of the list.

Kiper has Walker running No. 2 overall for the Lions, with the justification that they'll use pass rush, even with Aidan Hutchinson being off the list (he's taken No. 1). On some level , I recognize the idea. Walker has the ideal size to be a 4-3 linebacker and has the athleticism that is normally reserved to a 3-4 edge-rusher. The challenge I'm trying reconcile is taking this big of a chance with a top five pick for someone who had 9.5 sacks in college ... all in all.

It's not a secret that raw stats aren't the be all-all, be all of college pass rushers, but here's what I'm worried about: In the top 10 sacks in the world in Madden NFL 23 Madden NFL 23 last year the only player to not have at least a 10.0 sacks in his college season. That's Micah Parsons. It's really frightening to imagine a player this high , without proving success.

Cross is the best offensive tackle to block passes in this draft, period. Thus, the thought of him being dropped to the 13th pick. 13 spot is astonishment to me. I understand why this happened due to the way their mock was developing however I can't believe it.

Not too long ago, I had Cross drawn in to The Panthers in the No. 6. I was skeptical that the possibility of him not being available. There are upside concerns with Cross who are prompting some (including myself) to pick Evan Neal above him as the second-best offensive tackle the draft, but I would still be stunned to find Cross being picked by Falcons and Seahawks taking him off the market.

That said, if the Texans manage to come away with Kayvon Thibodeaux AND Charles Cross as this mock is planned, could it be a party in Houston.

Every single brother and sister has Sauce Gardner going as the best cornerback of the year. I get it. From there , the second best CB could be Derek Stingley Jr, and I agree with that. After that , the mock by Kiper and McShay gets off track for me.

Daxton Hill at No. 18. Andrew Booth Jr. at No. 25. we'll wait until pick 48 for Kaiir Elam? What's this madness?

Elam is more valuable than both Hill and Booth Jr. to me and is soaring. Mel almost certainly confirms that he chose Hill earlier because he personally enjoys his company, which isn't a bad thing, but it scares me a bit. Taking a guy who almost exclusively played slot corner in the college as the 18th overall pick is a real concern for me.

I saw Hill going in the late 20s on a playoff team and, more importantly, after Elam was gone from the board.

It's another Mel selection and he admits that Watson might be a little unproven -- but still I'm shocked that the fact that he's picked no. 22 to the Packers together with cheapest madden coins some of the other talent that's still on the board.
