"When we had completed the first game, we began working for expansions WoTLK Gold" Kaplan said. "We didn't think of an expansion we'd like to develop. We thought, 'What's many expansions we'd like to create to this game? Since we'd like to have this list which we can sort through and prioritize. Outland along with Northrend were included on the list. Cataclysm was a surprising deviation from the list, as it was not part of the initial expansion plan that we were considering. It evolved from a variety of creative ideas coming together in one go."

In the case of World of Warcraft, Blizzard's initial expansion list also indicated an unrelated release order to the actual game's release order. "As the truth is when we first launched WOW we first thought we'd release Lich King the first" explained the official, and pointing out it was the case that Outland along with Northrend were listed in the list of expansions.

This unpredictable nature, along with the flexibility of Blizzard to its direction was also the reason that drove the development of Cataclysm as an entire expansion, said the director. "When we launched WOW, the idea of Cataclysm didn't exist in any way. We definitely had the concept to make Deathwing however the entire concept of Cataclysm was born from trying to decide what we believed was the right choice to do with the game in the future. We didn't think five years ago that breaking the world apart was it."

WOW will run "for so long as Internet is online."
