CBSE Class 10th English Board Exam Pattern

The pattern of the theory English exam is as follows:

• Reading Comprehension (20 marks): This section tests conceptual understanding, decoding skills, analysis, inference, interpretation, and vocabulary usage of students.

1. Reading Comprehension through Unseen Passages (20 Marks)

This section comprises two unseen passages: a discursive passage of 400-450 words carrying 10 marks, and a case-based factual passage of 200-250 words, which includes visual input such as statistical data or charts, also carrying 10 marks. The total combined length of the two passages will be approximately 600-700 words. Questions will include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Objective Type Questions, and Short Answer Questions which is to be answered in 30-40 words.

Section B: Writing Skills and Grammar

1. Grammar (10 Marks)

The grammar section, carrying 10 marks, will ask questions based on the students’ understanding and application of key grammatical concepts. These include determiners, tenses, modals, subject-verb concord, and reported speech. Reported speech will cover commands and requests, statements, and questions.

The question in this section will test students on the correct use of spelling, punctuation, and grammar through exercises like gap filling, editing, and sentence transformation. Out of 12 questions, students will need to attempt any 10.

1. Writing Skills (10 Marks)

This section includes two writing tasks. The first is to write a formal letter based on a given situation in about 100-120 words. Students will be given two questions and must attempt one, which will carry 5 marks. The second task involves writing an analytical paragraph of 100-120 words based on a given map, chart, graph, or set of cues. Again, one out of two questions must be attempted, which will also carry 5 marks.

Section C: Language Through Literature

1. Literature Section (40 Marks)

This section includes two parts: Reference to the Context and Short Long Answer Questions.

In the Reference to the Context part (10 marks), students will answer two extracts. The first extract will be chosen from two given options from Drama/Prose, and the second from two options from Poetry. These questions will include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Objective Type Questions, Very Short Answer Questions (one word or one sentence), and Short Answer Questions (30-40 words). They are designed to assess the students' inference, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and vocabulary skills.

The Short and Very Long Answer Questions part carries 30 marks. Students will answer four out of five short answer questions from the book First Flight in 40-50 words each (4×3=12 marks). Next, they will answer two out of three short answer questions from Footprints Without Feet in 40-50 words each (2×3=6 marks).

In addition, students will answer one out of two long answer questions from First Flight in 100-120 words to assess creativity, imagination, and interpretation beyond the text (6 marks). Similarly, one out of two long answer questions from Footprints Without Feet will be attempted, focusing on theme, character sketch, or plot analysis, also in 100-120 words (6 marks).
