As it goes in the NFL, not all jobs are created equal.Oftentimes, neophyte head coaches in the NFL walk into suboptimal situations. Whether it's lack of draft capital, cap i sues or poor roster construction, there's no such thing as an ideal NFL job for a first-time coach. The same can be said about the head coaching openings this cycle. All five the Broncos, Colts, Panthers, Texans and Cardinals are incomplete squads in some way, shape or form. What might appeal to some coaches may not appeal to others. Are prospective coaches looking for a playoff-ready roster? A blank slate? Cap space? Or maybe they're looking for a ma sive payday?MORE: That said, some openings are better than others, even though not all of them are a sexy or appealing option in 2023. Here's how they rank, from worst to best: General manager:VacantCap space:~$22 million2023 NFL Draft picks:FiveThe next head coach of the Cardinals isn't picking the job as much as Kyler Murray is picking the next McTelvin Agim Jersey head coach of the Cardinals. That could make things me sy.Lest we forget, Kliff Kingsbury and Murray were something of a package deal coming in to the NFL in 2019. Murray was supposed to excel at operating Kingsbury's system, and while he's been productive, Murray couldn't break into the top 10 in the league. To that end, Murray was in a down year before tearing his ACL.That knee injury may keep him out the majority of the 2023 season, and he might not be back to full strength until 2024. That's a tough proposition for any incoming coach to navigate. It's also unclear how the power structure will work with the new coach coming in, as well as a new GM: Will the GM pick the coach? Will Kyler Murray pick the GM? Will the coach pick the GM? Really, this is all leading to Murray as QB1, GM and coach. That'll be entertaining, if nothing else.MORE: General manager:Chris BallardCap space:~$20 million.2023 NFL Draft picks:SevenThe Colts aren't appealing for a few reasons. On offense, the team needs a total overhaul, from QB on down. Jonathan Taylor is a key cog, but even he hasn't been able to carry what's left of Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan in recent years. On defense, the Colts' middling squad need a big-time injection of energy and talent, too. Several collapses throughout the year including the biggest in NFL history and an overall lack of top-end talent means this is a little bit longer than simply putting in a new, veteran coach. The Colts have some Calvin Anderson Jersey decent cap maneuverability, and with seven picks, have a standard allotment come April. They're just not as loaded on young talent as you'd want, and that may take more than a little bit of time to build.Of course, owner Jim Irsay's eccentricitiesare a factor in whoever winds up taking the job. To that end, Irsay has traditionally exercised patience with his head coaches, with each of his last five full-time hires getting at least three years. The new head coach will probably get that same leash, even if Chris Ballard seems to be on thin ice.MORE: General manager:George PatonCap space:~$10 million2023 NFL Draft picks:SevenSimilar to the situation they found themselves in before they hired Nathaniel Hackett, the Broncos' job is a just-add-water situation. The defense is still young and talented, even with the trade of Bradley Chubb to the Dolphins in 2022. The offense is a bit of a reclamation project, considering Ru sell Mike Boone Jersey Wilson is coming off the worst season of his career. It's hard to picture Wilson being totally washed, though, and the offense still has skill position talent with a decent offensive line.Because of the roster, the expectations for a new head coach will be very high, which makes sense when you consider some of the names the Broncos are considering at head coach. Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh are two front-runners for the job, both established and succe sful coaches.MORE: General manager:Nick CaserioCap space:~$47 million2023 NFL Draft picks:11The Texans' tank job came up just short in Week 18, ultimately landing with the No. 2 overall pick (and one pick away from Bryce Young). The Texans ending up with the No. 2 pick as opposed to No. 1 overall is way, way overstated, though. The Texans are almost as clean-slate a job as is available, which is a good thing for any incoming coaches, and they have a very, very good amount of draft capital to work with, which includes two first-round picks. That said, of the things that may attract a coach, there are equal factors deterring one. There seems to be a bit of a shaky standing with GM Nick Caserio, who has churned the roster over the last two years. They have some good core players CB Derek Stingley Jr., RB Dameon Pierce but need an infusion of talent in a big way, and that might happen this offseason. Owner Cal McNair is also coming off firing two coaches (David Culley and Lovie Smith) after a single year each. The pre sure to produce may exist immediately. As long as the Texans have the patience to see through a rebuild, then they could get good in a hurry with the right head coach. Oh, they just have Brett Jones Jersey to find a quarterback, too. (Sorry, Davis Mills.) General manager:Scott FittererCap space:~($4 million)2023 NFL Draft picks:SevenThe Panthers are in a weird but advantageous spot. The GM stays active and is constantly looking to refresh the roster, which is a great benefit to an incoming coach. The owner, David Tepper, seems invested in the product and won't let costs get in the way of building a winner, which is also good.On defense, the Panthers have plenty of young, talented players: cornerback Jaycee Horn Duke Dawson Jr. Jersey , edge rusher Brian Burns and lineman Derrick Brown to name a few.Their cap situation is weird, but definitely not unmanageable: There are moves the Panthers can make to alleviate some cap in 2023, but beyond that, it clears up a lot. In 2024, their projected cap space rockets to $80 million, and $125 million in 2025, and that's before potential salary cap increases. The Panthers also have the benefit of playing in one of the NFL's weakest divisions, the NFC South, which likely won't get good overnight, especially with Tom Brady's potential departure from Tampa Bay.MORE:The problem, which is no small one: Carolina doesn't have a long-term solution under center, and one likely won't come in 2023, unle s someone falls to them in the draft or a miraculous trade is swung during the offseason. In all, it doesn't seem optimal on the surface, but the Panthers have a good balance of talent and wiggle room to get things done, with an owner and a GM who are constantly shuffling the deck. That's good work, if you can get it.
