At first you should introduce the food slowly and steadily, sudden and abrupt changes can force even the most easy-to-please cat to refuse food for a day or two, even if they are hungry. That's the last thing you want, because experts believe that a starving cat is at higher risk of developing fatty liver disease, and the fatter the cat, the higher the risk.
In addition to gradually changing food, here is a list of things you can do to improve the taste of your cat's new food:
- Add a pinch of salt.
- Food with a strong smell is tempting. Mix in some scented cat food or some meaty baby food (no onions!).
- Add moistened cat treats.
- Change the texture slightly, if it is minced, add some pieces of meat, raw meat or fish (mackerel, salmon, tuna).
